Teaching sentence writing is not always easy. If you are looking for some new ideas and inspiration to teach this very important skill, keep reading! I think you are going to love this resource! It is CRAMMED with anchor charts, vocabulary, new ideas, and more to help you run a comprehensive writing program for your 2nd and 3rd graders.
This program is a systematic one that gives you set up ideas for each unit along with coordinating mini anchor charts/posters to help you teach everything included in the unit. We use 4 mentor texts. With each text, you will find 5 days of lessons to go with each book! That allows you to teach a writing lesson each day, every day, for that month. Because there are mentor texts, grammar lessons, read-alouds, and loads of interactive and conversational lessons in each unit, you will be providing your students with part of a balanced literacy program!
Unit 2 Overview
Let’s take a look at Unit 2 more closely. You will find teaching anchor charts on adjectives, nouns, and verbs. These coordinate with fun lessons to teach each one. Once students understand what can go into a sentence, we then break it down into a subject/predicate. We then look deeper at the subject and predicate and add details from the “5 W’s and an H” poster. These concepts are taught in writer’s workshop lessons that use 4 mentor texts for this month. The lessons are not isolated, they scaffold each other to build confidence and understanding as students learn to write. Kids respond much better to learn about conventions when it is taught this way. We also use a mentor text to look at mentor sentences. (Just how do great authors craft an interesting sentence?)
Writing is all about having fun and learning skills to let kids explore their creative side in a non-threatening way. I have included lots of interactive lessons where students are working in pairs or groups and engaging in conversations about their ideas. You can find an interactive writer’s notebook to complement this unit here.
You will enjoy how all your writing lessons are planned for you right down to the tiniest detail with support materials and printables for students.
